Cryptocurrency market capitalization, commonly called market cap, is the total dollar value of all coins currently in circulation for a given cryptocurrency. The formula is simple: current price multiplied by circulating supply. If Bitcoin trades at $60,000 and there are 19.7 million BTC in circulation, Bitcoin's market cap is approximately $1.18 trillion.
Market cap is the single most important metric for understanding the relative size and weight of a cryptocurrency within the broader market. It tells you far more than price alone. A coin priced at $0.001 with 1 quadrillion tokens in circulation could have a higher market cap than a coin priced at $500 with only 1 million tokens. Price without context is meaningless. Market cap provides that context.
Our live cryptocurrency prices table ranks all 100 assets by market capitalization in descending order. Bitcoin sits at the top because it commands the largest share of total crypto market value, typically between 45% and 60% of the entire market. This percentage is called Bitcoin dominance, and experienced traders watch it closely because when Bitcoin dominance rises, altcoins typically underperform, and when dominance falls, capital is rotating into smaller cryptocurrencies.
The total cryptocurrency market cap fluctuates constantly based on price movements across all assets. At the peak of the 2021 bull market, the total crypto market cap reached approximately $3 trillion. During bear markets, it has contracted to below $800 billion. Our live market data, sourced directly from CoinGecko, updates every 5 minutes so you always have a current read on the total market size and individual coin valuations.
The market cap column shows the total dollar value of each cryptocurrency in circulation. It is calculated by multiplying the current price by the circulating supply. Sort by this column to see the true ranking of cryptocurrencies by size and importance in the market.
The 24h % column shows how much a coin's price has moved in the past 24 hours. Green numbers indicate gains and red numbers indicate losses. Large moves above 5% in either direction often signal a news event, major trade, or shift in market sentiment worth investigating.
The 7d % column gives you weekly trend direction. A coin showing a positive 7-day change even with a negative 24-hour change is still in an uptrend. Use the 7-day column to distinguish temporary dips from genuine trend reversals.
The 24h volume column shows how much of a coin has been traded in the past day. A price increase on high volume is a strong bullish signal. A price increase on very low volume may not be sustainable. Always cross-reference price changes with volume to assess move quality.
Not all cryptocurrencies carry the same risk profile. Market cap tiers help investors assess relative risk, liquidity, and growth potential across different assets in the top 100.
The two largest cryptocurrencies by a wide margin. Mega cap assets have the deepest liquidity, the widest institutional adoption, and serve as the primary store of value and smart contract infrastructure in the crypto ecosystem. They are the safest and most liquid assets to hold but typically offer lower percentage gains during bull runs compared to smaller caps.
Established platforms and stablecoins with proven track records, significant developer activity, and institutional interest. Large cap cryptos are volatile compared to stocks but significantly more stable than mid or small cap coins. They attract serious capital during bull markets and tend to survive bear markets where smaller projects fail.
Growing projects with real utility, active communities, and established use cases. Mid cap cryptocurrencies carry more risk than large caps but offer significantly higher growth potential. Many of today's large cap assets were mid caps two to three years ago. This tier is where many traders focus their research during bull markets.
The highest risk and potentially highest reward tier. Small cap cryptocurrencies can deliver 10x to 100x returns during bull cycles but also face the highest probability of going to zero. Very few small cap projects become large caps. Due diligence is critical in this tier, and position sizes should reflect the elevated risk.

Cryptocurrency market cap is the total dollar value of all coins in circulation for a given asset. It is calculated by multiplying the current price by the circulating supply. Bitcoin's market cap of roughly $1 trillion means if you bought every Bitcoin in existence at the current price, it would cost approximately $1 trillion. Market cap is the best way to compare the relative size of different cryptocurrencies regardless of their individual token prices.
Crypto market cap equals current price multiplied by circulating supply. For example, if Ethereum trades at $3,000 and there are 120 million ETH in circulation, Ethereum's market cap is $360 billion. This formula is the standard across all cryptocurrency data platforms and gives a standardized way to rank and compare assets.
Bitcoin (BTC) has consistently held the highest market cap of any cryptocurrency since its creation in 2009. Bitcoin typically commands between 45% and 60% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization, a figure known as Bitcoin dominance. Ethereum (ETH) holds the second position by a significant margin. These rankings can be confirmed in real time on our live cryptocurrency prices table above.
The 24-hour price change percentage shows how much a cryptocurrency's price has moved over the past 24 hours compared to its price exactly 24 hours earlier. A positive percentage shown in green means the price is higher than 24 hours ago. A negative percentage shown in red means it is lower. This metric resets every 24 hours on a rolling basis, not at midnight.
Trading volume in cryptocurrency is the total dollar value of a coin that has been bought and sold across all exchanges during a specific time period, typically 24 hours. High trading volume alongside a price increase confirms strong buying interest. High volume with a price decrease confirms selling pressure. A price move on unusually low volume is considered less reliable and more likely to reverse.
Circulating supply is the number of cryptocurrency tokens that are publicly available and actively trading in the market. It excludes tokens held in reserve, locked by the founding team, or not yet released through mining or staking. Circulating supply is the figure used in market cap calculations. It differs from total supply (which includes locked tokens) and max supply (the absolute maximum that will ever exist).
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's market cap expressed as a percentage of the total cryptocurrency market cap. When Bitcoin dominance is rising, it means capital is flowing into Bitcoin relative to altcoins, and altcoins tend to underperform. When Bitcoin dominance falls, capital is rotating into altcoins, often signaling the start of an altcoin season. Our live market stats bar at the top of this page shows current Bitcoin dominance calculated from real-time data.
Fully diluted valuation (FDV) is the market cap a cryptocurrency would have if its maximum possible supply were already in circulation, calculated at the current price. If a coin has a max supply of 1 billion tokens but only 100 million are circulating, the FDV is 10 times the current market cap. A very high FDV compared to current market cap suggests significant future token unlocks could create selling pressure.
Our cryptocurrency prices table updates automatically every 5 minutes with fresh data from the CoinGecko API. CoinGecko aggregates prices from hundreds of exchanges worldwide to produce accurate, volume-weighted prices for each asset. You do not need to refresh the page manually to see updated prices during your session.
Cryptocurrency markets trade 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no closing bell, unlike traditional stock markets. This means prices respond instantly to news, regulatory announcements, large institutional trades, social media trends, and changes in Bitcoin's price direction. The market is also smaller and less liquid than traditional financial markets, meaning large individual transactions can move prices significantly. This creates the extreme volatility that crypto is known for.
There is no single definition of a good market cap, but market cap tiers help frame the risk and opportunity. Mega cap cryptocurrencies above $100 billion are the safest and most liquid. Large caps between $10 billion and $100 billion offer stability with growth potential. Mid caps between $1 billion and $10 billion carry higher risk but higher upside. Small caps below $1 billion offer the highest potential gains but also the highest probability of failure. Your investment goals and risk tolerance should guide which tier you focus on.
Market cap measures the total value of all coins in existence at current prices, giving a snapshot of a cryptocurrency's overall size. Trading volume measures how much of that asset is actively changing hands each day, indicating market activity and liquidity. A high market cap with low volume means the asset is large but not very actively traded. A lower market cap with high volume means smaller but highly active trading. Both metrics together give a complete picture of an asset's market health.
Our live cryptocurrency prices table on this page is one of the most straightforward ways to track crypto prices. It shows real-time prices, 24-hour changes, 7-day changes, market cap, volume, and circulating supply for the top 100 cryptocurrencies in one place. You can also use our crypto heatmap for a visual representation of the same data, which makes spotting market trends significantly faster.
Being in the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap means a project has achieved sufficient market value, liquidity, and trading activity to rank among the largest assets in the crypto ecosystem. Top 100 coins typically have greater exchange listings, more institutional awareness, and higher trading liquidity than smaller projects. However, being in the top 100 does not guarantee quality or long-term viability. Many projects have entered and exited the top 100 over the years.
Yes, cryptocurrency markets operate continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with no market closures for weekends, holidays, or after-hours sessions. This is fundamentally different from stock markets, which have fixed trading hours. The always-on nature of crypto means prices can make significant moves at any hour, and major news events can impact prices instantly regardless of time zone.
